This blog post could also be called: Baseball + the Art of Selling Churros.

On March 11, 2020 we found ourselves in Peoria Arizona sitting in the rain watching the Seattle Mariners play in spring training vs. the San Diego Padres. We had no idea this was going to be the last baseball game for the foreseeable future. Our only present concern was the amount of cold, the lack of sunshine and the fact that the free game program was only going to defend my head against the rainfall for a short, soggy, amount of time.

We watched the late game roster of Mariner hopefuls rally back from a rough couple innings and by the seventh inning (when the game was called due to weather) – the Ms had taken the lead.

But I almost missed all of that.

I couldn’t stop laughing at the Churro guy. (please check out this video so you can laugh with me. It will give you perspective for the rest of this.)

I have no idea what the Churro guy does in the off season. I don’t know if he even wanted to be a Churro guy when spring training started, but his incredible zest for life as a man selling cinnamon sticks has become our official motto for everything we do moving forward.

The next two days in Arizona, the world started falling apart. COVID19 had become a danger to so many people that the side effects meant ending the rest of spring training (we still had game tickets in hand for the next two days). Then it took out a concert we were going to see while we were in town. Finally it took out the Canucks hockey game we’d planned on attending in Arizona.

Clambering to the top of the disappointment pile –> watching the disaster unfold in Washington meant losing our jobs back home while we sat in rainy Arizona with our jaw to the floor. “Whaaaaaat is happening.”

The husband looked over at me while I scrolled through the news on my phone, and as I was reporting one piece of bad news after the other…. he exclaimed… “cchhhuUurrRo” (neither of us are proficient at rolling our Rs).

We decided we’re gonna find joy through this mess. We, as a world, as a country, as a business, as a couple… are going to spend some time in the rain and we’re either going to be the guy that walks by and says “Who wants to buy the last one and then I’m getting out of this crappy weather”…. or we are going to dance our way through the seats yelling and cheering and making people smile.

Join me won’t you?

Make someone smile today. If you haven’t already you HAVE to follow John Krasinski’s “Some Good News” on YouTube.

And, if you’re reading this – and you know the Churro guy…

  1. Please tell him thank you
  2. Please ask him to ship me a box of cinnamon sticks.
